Envelope addressed to Sherlock Holmes
Although Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character, hundreds of real-life letters have been sent addressed to him. Richard Lancelyn Green published a selection of these as Letters to Sherlock Holmes (1985), and many more can be found in his collection.
The envelope shown on this page was posted in 1908 to "Sherlok Holmes, Backestreet, London", but some helpful person forwarded it to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle at his home in Crowborough. The postage stamp shows Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria.
