INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH

A selection of the books from the collection, numbering approximately 900 volumes, have been recently made available for reference use in the Local Studies section of the Central Library in Portsmouth. No appointment is necessary. To use this section of the library, you will need to bring one of the following forms of identification:

  • Portsmouth City Libraries ticket
  • CARN Record Office card
  • Driving licence
  • Current student card, giving your name and name of institution
  • Armed forces ID card
  • Other proof of name and address, such as a gas bill

At present the remainder of the collection is still being prepared for public access. This preparation includes cataloguing the individual items so that items of interest can be located easily and applying preservation techniques so that they can be handled safely.

Work is currently being undertaken into the provision of a space where the collection can be enjoyed by visitors and researchers. This will be housed in the Central Library, Guildhall Square, Portsmouth. It is anticipated that this facility will be become available to coincide with the completion of the cataloguing of the five prioritised areas of the collection – the Doyle family photographs and papers, spiritualist photographs and papers, dramatisations, Victorian and Edwardian World and Sherlock Holmes Phenomena.
