THE BOOKS OF THE COLLECTION

Staff across the library service are involved in the large scale task of sorting and cataloguing the books which form a significant part of the collection.

This section contains all of Conan Doyle’s works, including first and early editions in many languages, derivative fiction, bound volumes and single issues of journals.  There are also a large number of pamphlets and journals including newsletters of Sherlock Holmes groups in various countries.

A selection of the books from the collection, numbering approximately 900 volumes, have been recently made available for reference use in the Local Studies section of the Central Library in Portsmouth. No appointment is necessary. To use this section of the library, you will need to bring one of the following forms of identification:

  • Portsmouth City Libraries ticket
  • CARN Record Office card
  • Driving licence
  • Current student card, giving your name and name of institution
  • Armed forces ID card
  • Other proof of name and address, such as a gas bill

Available books from the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection are included in the Portsmouth City Council Library Service Online Catalogue.
